Baby Quilt for A Gift

SO I pulled out this cute alphabet animal fabric to make a baby quilt for Lovely Jean's co-worker.  I think she said it's a boy, so I coordinated the little blue checks with it. This is the same pattern I used for the quilt I made earlier in the civil war/reproduction/prim fabric. It's a free pattern from So Can She here's the LINK. It's laid out on the diagonal, so I starteched the heck out of the border when I pressed it.

I had just a tiny little bump in the edge when I loaded it on Freddie, but I worked it in pretty well. I'm getting good at fudging those bumps in!

I used the same heart design that I used in the red quilt HERE. 

I made it kind of scrappy and was torn with how the 4 patch squares should go. I settled with them going any way they want to!

The animals are so cute and a nice variety. I added borders to the backing and I think I did a pretty darn good job getting the animal print centered on the back. 

I had a little trouble with Freddie and thread breaks, but I'm getting very good at fixing the stitching when that happens. 

It came out very good I think! One more practice quilt done!

I think I'll be practicing for a LONG time. 

And this little guy has been very busy outdoors!

catching poor Bob,

dumping my shredder bin in the house, 

playing on the porch, 

and inspecting sticks out in the yard.

I'll need to work in some more quilting time!

A Finish

 So, I got this quilt kit awhile back when I made a stop at The Little Red Hen in Muscatine.  Here's the picture from their web site.

I thought I liked it, even though I'm not much for the Civil war/reproduction/prim style of fabrics. 

Here's the picture of what came in the kit.

Yeah, black and white. Really ? What am I supposed to do with this?!  Here's what the 10" Layer cake stack fabric looks like. 

And it came with this paper foundation piecing pad of paper called a Cake Mix.  You're supposed to use two of the 10" squares from the kit, layer them with the paper and sew, then cut on the lines. Okey dokey. So I sewed up a couple of the papers. I should have figured it out sooner, but all you're doing is making half square triangles. 

I don't like this at all. It seems like there are better ways to make this block, it's just a square in a square. I like paper foundation piecing when it needs to be a precise or complicated block-it works really well for perfect things, but this is just half square triangles. BOO! I'm going to change the pattern and not use the silly cake mix papers. 

So I tried a star block, thinking it could work out, but I thought about it a few days and wasn't sold on it.  Then I got my daily email from Sew Can She. sew can she Link And it was for the Charm Patch Throw. So, I cut up the 10" layer cake squares and went to work on this! It's built on an angle, so when I was all done with making a lot of 4 patches it was easy to line them up. 

I had enough blocks to enlarge the quilt to about 90" square! 

Here it is getting bigger! I sewed each row to each side as I went along. It went together so easily! 

And the top is done!

I used every bit of fabric from that terrible kit.

I loaded it on Freddie-the long way. 

I chose a design called beads-it came already loaded on Quilt Path. 

Things went along pretty well until I got to the 2nd area, something went wonky on me, well truthfully, I loaded a new bobbin and failed to pull the thread up correctly, so I backed it up and re quilted the row. I'll go back and rip out the bad stitches when I'm all done. 

You can see the problem areas-I marked them on the picture.

And I started to rip out the bad stitches while it was on the frame, but it was much easier to just make the stitching correctly, then, rip out the bad ones when it's all done. 

You can see the pattern pretty well on the dark borders. 

It really came out good I think!

I used a pretty neutral wide back on the back. 

And I got all the bad stitched ripped out without any problem-it only took a few minutes to do it. 

And here it is all done!

It came out really good! In the bright light on the deck it looks brighter than it really is. 

No more bad kit sitting around being a UFO! 

I really need to remember to take photos at noon so there aren't' shadows across the quilt!

Music and a Finish

So last week was Drew's kindergarten music event. It was very clear that singing in a group is not Drew's thing. He stood there perfectly well, and yawned and did not even sing a not or make a motion. Oh Well.

It was so cute! The theme was Under the Sea, so all the songs they sang were ocean themed. I made them line up for a quick photo-you see how that went!

And in other news I finished a baby quilt too!

I had the blue puppy fabric in my stash for a while so I paired it with a little red and white to make this cute quilt. Here's a link to the quilt pattern I used  From Sew Can She.

I set it up on Freddie and chose a heart motif. I t came out really good! I'm getting better at making the design end up where it's supposed to!

Ringo is my quilting pal-face it he's a velcro dog. 

I took it outside for a picture-it was a little windy.

It looks like something else with the sun shining through it.

You can however see that I pieced the back with dots and dogs, and I got the seams lined up really well!

In for a quick rinse and spin and dry and it's great!

No bleeding of the red, no loose stitches, all good! Ready for Darling Daughter to gift to a co worker.
