HOT T Shirt Quilt

So, my cousin Kathy, in Florida, sent me a box of T shirts from her Dad, who passed away in 2018. They are very stylish shirts with most of them having designs by Guy Harvey. I had to google him. He's an artist, scientist and environmentalist who supports care of marine habitats. So a good guy.

SO I go the shirts ready to go while I was thinking about what pattern to go with. It takes a long time/lot of work to de-bone shirts and get them fused to lightweight interfacing. Iris helped. 

She was helping flatten them out.....anyways, I got some really nice interfacing off Amazon, here.

It is the perfect weight, and adheres really well. 

I got them all trimmed to 19" square. Most of them are in good shape, but I had one that needed some work, so I mended that one and moved on. 

Iris likes the pattern I chose-a shadow box design. I had a nice day shop hopping with my other cousin, Robin, we got all the fabrics I needed for this project and another project that is coming along too. 

I got it loaded on Freddie, that pretty blue backing was so smooth and nice to load. 

And I chose this design that looks kind of ocean-ie to me anyways. It's actually tribal something or other, but by the time I got done playing around it's more ocean then anything I think!

I struggled with Freddie a little bit, but changed the needle to a bigger one and gave it a tiny turn to the left and it looks pretty good. 

I keep seeing this little thread pull at the points of the design, but I hope it will relax after a nice washing.

All done! Off we go for a trim and binding.

The back is pretty!

I like the shadow box effect. THe dark fabric is Licorice from Confetti Cottons. The blue map-like print is from Riley Blake's line called National Parks-topographic blue.

On the porch it does look good! It's around 90degrees today, so the sun was going down and it was cooling a tiny bit. 

I love the way it came out, I hope Kathy loves it. 

ANd with the pockets, I put together this pillow, and the back is the one duplicate t shirt she sent, I didn't want to use it in the quilt, because it's the same picture. 

And lookie at those points after a quick wash-almost perfect! Just as I hoped! 

I always learn a few new things with every quilt I make, and this one was a good learning-it's been awhile since I made a t shirt quilt. And this was a first for Freddie. I gotta remember that bigger needle helped a lot to eliminate the broken threads issue I was having.

I'm catching up now!

Look how caught up I am! I've been working on this quilt from a pattern in the All Iowa shop Hop magazine. It's a struggle to get a little time! But here's Iris willing to help.

I'll get it done eventually. 

I spent 3 days in the hospital-I have a big ol kidney stone! So I'm out with this drain hanging out of my kidney. The Dr. that can remove the stone has me scheduled for November. I'm shopping for a new Dr. 

Look at this guy at the Noelridge park in Cedar Rapids. We were waiting for Mommy to get done teaching her class at Kirkwood, so we spent time at the park.

I tried to get a picture of him chasing the ducks, but he's too fast!!

I consulted with another Dr. and am taking Potassium Citrate to try to break up the kidney stone-he has me scheduled for surgery on my birthday, but we are all hoping it breaks up on it's own. I'll have an x ray in a few weeks-fingers crossed!!! 

 

This One Is Done....I Think

 So I had trouble with this design. I posted on the FB Group page for Quilt path and here's what happened....

Well Thanks ! SO I was already pretty deep into this design-I wasn't waiting all day  ya know!!

So every place there are those blue dots, it would stop and start over, so I was reaching under and cutting the bobbin thread while the design moved to it's next location.

And I got through the dang thing and I like the design but....

As I was working to find a solution, I ran the pattern and then when I was all done I went and ripped out all the extra stitching! What else could I do!?

Look at all those wrong lines of stitching!

It's DONE!

I like the batik fabrics. Most of them are from the All Iowa Shop Hop this past summer. And the pattern is from the Shop Hop magazine from 2019.

I like the 1980's vibe.

It looks great, but that stitching is going to be the death of me. I have a feeling I'm going to need to go in and re-stitch a few of those ends. 

Gift Box Quilt

 I just finished a quilt from this book, called Gift Box. Here's the Author LINK

I got these 2 charm packs, called Land of Enchantment from Moda,  on the All Iowa Shop Hop this year, and thought the turquoise Moda Grunge color looked good with it.  Learn about the AISH HERE.

It's a pretty easy pattern and I used my clearly perfect slotted trimmer on the half square triangles-fast and accurate!

A while later I've got most of the top together.

This makes up to something like 77" X 67" or thereabouts.

I loaded it up on Freddie yesterday and worked out a pattern in Quilt Path-I thought I'd let the computer do the work this time. 

Here we go! Freddie is making these daisy-like shapes, I set it to alternate the design on every other row.

TA-DA all done and I think it looks better in the daylight.

And the backing is some wide back I got on the All Iowa Shop Hop too!

You can see the design on the back a little bit better-and the dog hair too!!

I'm still having a little problem getting my rows exactly right on Freddie. And I suspect that I somehow managed to squash the rows too close together on the 2nd row, see the yellow circles? It sewed them as flattened on the one edge-it's a straight line instead of making the entire flower petal. I get better every time or I make a new boo boo! 

Anyway, it came out looking good and the little stitching issues will not make it any less cozy!
