So I've managed to accumulate a good sized pile of worn out jeans. I've used some over the years for patching and jean repairs, but, it's time to tackle that pile!
I cut the jeans all into blocks, 8' X 5" and cut up all the flannel I had in my stash too. I had to go buy a little bit more of flannel though. My idea was to make a denim rag quilt, with no batting and flannel on the back, I read a few blogs and people who have made these before and they all made it sound easy peasy.
SO I layout the blocks-denim and flannel together-in to a nice design. I like the flannels together!
And get down to business and sew them all together. I should have counted them, but I didn't. I made like a brick wall pattern, using about a 1/2" seam allowance.
Then I went down a bad path, ALL the folks who have made this before said, clip the seam allowances so it will ravel and be a nice soft rag quilt. I thought, but what if I don't want to clip the seam allowances?
So I threw that baby into the wash and didn't clip the seam allowances.
And this is what that looks like.......HUGE MISTAKE.
SO I spent a couple of days trimming off the seam allowances and picking out strings. Then I spent a couple of days clipping the seam allowances, like I should have to begin with.
And here it is! All's well that ends well! I clipped the seam allowances, and it ragged like it was supposed to. The flannel on the back looks really good. And the whole thing is heavy!
Here's the front, or back, or what ever...the denim is getting fluffy after only one wash. The folks who DO KNOW what they're talking about, say it gets better with every washing.
I can check denim/flannel rag quilt off my list of someday I'll do that quilts.
